What Are You Watching?

I'm currently watching through all the seasons of Red Dwarf on Netflix. Any fans? For those that have never heard about it, it's a UK TV sci-fi sitcom that started in the late 80's, It's kind of like the Rick & Morty of its day.

I have mixed feelings going back. I do like the way they'll end an episode with no resolve though. Sometimes I feel we can work to hard too try and button up a plot when it's really not needed.

I watched one episode, but could not get into it. I am loving The Boys  and I really like The Witcher.

I've not checked those out. I've had Staged recommended to me.

Just joined the one DVD at a time version of Netflix. Livin' the dream @ $9.99 a month! Got a few movies in queue that are presently in the netherworld between available to buy and available to rent/watch on streaming... Ford V. Ferrari, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Spiderman: Far From Home, Best of Enemies, etc.

Not very conducive for television tho since they'll only mail one disc of the show at a time haha... guess The Crown Season 4 will have to wait a while.

As for actually watched... both versions of "All Quiet on the Western Front" which were each really good, tho I actually liked the "newer" 1970's version the best. And "Beyond the Sea" about Bobby Darin which was so-so, musical numbers were nice tho!

I loved The Crown but then I love anything Peter Morgan makes. That guy managed to have me hooked on a film about football of all things.

Not into football (quasi-traumatic experiences playing soccer as a kid lol) but The Queen is at top of my queue and will probably check out Frost/Nixon later!

That's the thing, Derek. I hated sports as a kid but Damned United (which is about running a club) is amazing. Frost/Nixon is very good too.

I think there should be some kind of merit badge given out for completing GOT. I missed the entire wave of it years back, and finally had the chance to see it. I somehow feel more courageous after sitting on the couch for hours.

Nevermind. Had to cancel the Netflix DVD program. It was only going to work for me if they were operating at peak efficiency (by mail) and they've basically failed with website notifications (stated business day after joining) out of the gate. I don't have the patience for this atm.

Nothing's really floating my boat at the moment. The last great movie I saw was 'Capernaum' a few months ago( a little late to the party with that one), a cracking story and kinda reminded me of Incendies by Denis Villeneuve...on that note, high expectations for DUNE this December.

I find it so hard to commit to a new TV series sometimes. I miss TUBI being available in the UK as I loved watching through all the classic shlock they have on there. It would give me loads of ideas and I would often admire what the filmmakers were trying to do with very little money.

"admire what the filmmakers were trying to do with very little money." I suppose that leads nicely back to Red Dwarf. Loved it when it first came out, but hesitant to revisit it and spoil the memory.

It was tough going back. A lot of the jokes are old fashioned and the the integrity of the plots/universe is laughable. On the flip side, it's a lesson on how a show few believed in could go on to become so huge it nearly got its own movie. That's how a I treat a lot of that stuff, I go in with my filmmaking hat on and read up on the trivia. All too often, the negatives are a result of production issues. There's actually an episode of Red Dwarf where the actors are reading from auto-cues because the writers were drafting during the takes.

I try to wait until the series is concluded before I watch - though sometimes I crack. I waited till THE WALKING DEAD was in season 6 before I started watching. I hate the "8 episodes, 6 mo break, and a final 8 episodes to conclude the season" routine. I miss the old days when a season was 25 or even 35 episodes weekly from Sept till March lol.  As a side note, I think TWD has stayed too long at the dance, Should have ended a couple of seasons ago.  I love THE CROWN, I'm hooked on VERA. I watch very little television as I have a rather large film and TV collection, and tend to watch the old programs I grew up with.

Wait... The Walking Dead is still going?

I was learning about the development of LOST, very interesting, and they sure had to get a lot of episodes out per season. Maybe that's why it feels like a golden age. I guess now DVD boxsets mean a lot less for revenue and TV/streaming wants longer subscription lifetimes.

Yeah, TWD is still going. They are running it into the ground. I lost interest about two seasons ago, but I keep watching because at this point I have years invested in it and will feel like a quitter  lol. I have a friend who was a college roommate years ago with one of the writers on LOST. This guy told my friend that after season 5 they were out of ideas and wanted to end the show - but the execs said no, so they kept writing and made it as far fetched as they could so it would get canceled!

I've never seen TWD. All I know about it is they sacked the creator part way through. Nice.

Lindelof has said as much about LOST. The network thought they were haggling for more money when they kept saying they wanted to end it so kept increasing their offers. When they finally understood the writers wanted to wrap things up, they had a meeting to finalise it all. The team was under the impression they'd only have a couple more seasons and the network wanted to round it down to something like nine more.

That's the thing though. It's so hard to get TV viewers to stick with something, nobody wants to stop the momentum.

Wow! You're right - I haven't seen the creator of the comics on the "after show" in ages! I didn't know they got rid of him! I hate Zombie movies, and I watched the first episode and got hooked; loved the characters and the writing. BUT - I don't like gore, so I watch the episodes in B&W which makes it easier to watch.

I'm not a zombie fan either. The gore bores me. However, Death Valley was one of my all time favorite mockumentaries and I'm still angry it got canceled.

Thank God. I thought I might be the only person in the world who recently got hooked on VERA. Between that, MURDOCH MYSTERIES and BROKENWOOD MYSTERIES, I fear the pandemic has turned me into a 65-year-old woman. At least, in terms of TV viewing habits.

I did discover THE DETECTORISTS (Acorn.TV) and MYTHIC QUEST: RAVEN'S BANQUET (Apple TV+) thanks to COVID. Those now rank as two of my all-time favorite sitcoms. Highly recommend both. I mean, I could write an entire thesis on my new-found respect for both Mackenzie Crook and Rob McElhenney. Seriously, don't get me started.

I tried to watch Peaky Blinders and even got all the way to Season 3, but here the main character just takes his vice to a new level and is lighting up a cigarette in almost EVERY scene and that just annoyed the crap out of me. I don't care if that was a thing back then, it still doesn't make it right.

Other then that I would recommend Frontier, The Last Kingdom and / or  The Umbrella Academy. I also second what Janet Lynn Carey said: The Witcher and The Boys, they're both entertaining shows.

I watched "El Castillo de la Pureza." Good movie! "Dogtooth" owes quite a bit to it and I personally liked it better than that film.

Got on board with Redbox! Not sure why I never looked into it before cause I've known they (theoretically) existed for like a decade... maybe blended into the supermarket aesthetic? Not quite the selection of DVD Netflix but it's a good value and isn't dependent on company shipping or postal service time.

On the topic of Redbox, they are a great company to support as film fans. They give good distribution deals to indie filmmakers who would normally be left out.

CJ - Nice! Didn't even know that. I'm nothing but pleased so far. A 9pm next-day return date (ye olde Blockbuster probably would have been 2am, not to impugn ye current single-location Blockbuster in Oregon I'm sure y'all are fine don't sue me lol) generous with free rental codes and the on-demand seems to be similar or better value than amazon from what I've seen so far. Hope it carries on for a while! I know people don't do physical media as much anymore but $1.80 DVD n' $2.00 Blu Ray just past theater (or independent) rentals are tough to beat.

Yeah, a Redbox deal can mean you get a relatively small movie in a really valuable point of sale location. Getting on the shelves of a major retailer is hard but getting into the Redbox machines those retailers may have can be easier. Physical is also seeing a bit of a revival right now for a multitude of reasons.

Uh, can't seem to find Red Dwarf on Netflix USA. Guess all Netflix's are not the same?

Binge watched the entire (FX) Mr Inbetween on Hulu and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Of course, I re-watched all the Rick and Morty I could find.

For extra credit and stronger brain muscles, try to write scenes in your head as you binge.

Without streaming on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, I never would have made it through this pandemic

Yeah, Netflix catalogs vary by region. I just finished the last season of Archer which I feel has really gone downhill. Ended up re-watching the 90's Adams Family movies which were even funnier than I remember. Now really want to work with Christina Ricci LOL. I also checked out David Fincher's Zodiac which was surprisingly engaging for a near three hour run-time.

The Ricky and Morty heist movie parody episode is one of the best bits of satire I've seen in a while.
