If you have one or know of one you have checked out, please post a link or comment with directions to the site. I am interested in seeing what screenwriters offer on their sites beyond their available work. Thanks.
Thanks, Lily. Apart from the blog, do you find that having a website gets you projects? In other words, do you actively promote it and shop it or did you create it to be available so that people could find your material (when there weren't sites like Script Rev around)? Genuinely curious of your experience with having a site before I venture in that direction. I've heard stories of people paying for them to be designed but not using them and I'm trying to determine if it's for me.
I'm fortunate that I'm able to design my own website. But then, there's the whole drama of website hosting, which is another ball game, If you're unfamiliar with either web design or hosting, it can get a bit complicated, not to mention expensive if you're unable to do any of it yourself.
I don't use my site for promotions. I'm not an eMarketer. My site is an online portfolio, for both writing and art. Something to show if I meet someone who wants to know more about what I do. It's helped me to start conversations and I did get some art requests based on my site., For screenwriting, not at all. Anything I've received is here on ScriptRevolution. So, for me, my site is more like a business card. It's something I enjoy maintaining, nice to have, convenient to show, nothing more.
I am a writing nerd. When I am not writing, I love talking about writing, vlogging about writing or blogging about writing. I am about to upload a new video. I had a few days off. Had to have my dog of 18 years put down. Didn't feel like filming myself talking.
Hi Rick,
To answer the question you put to Lily about me getting work. Not directly. I get stuff through here. That is why I discuss this site so much. I do it for Google. If someone hears about me. They will either Google me or go to IMDB. So I make sure both are well feed. This may do nothing. But it also (in my opinion) better than nothing. Like a seat belt, does nothing till you need it.
It needs some freshening up. I designed it myself using WIX (a free website creation service) with zero knowledge on how to build a website. A few hours playing around with the software and a couple of how do I Google searches and your home.
I only have it as a backup repository for my scripts although I have gotten 2 paid short sales off of it. But if that was my goal - I probably wouldn't bother. Like I said - my goal was just to have a backup listing of my scripts. You really don't need more than this site and/or Simply Scripts if you want others to have visibility to your scripts. Since 2020 I have had 1800 visits to my site. I probably get ten times the view of scripts here.
But, no harm in trying WIX out - it is free and pretty easy to use
I used to. At the moment I deem SR hosting sufficient.
Future tense when I have more spare time/$ for (possible) trivialities I might set up a web 1.0 HTML website for (my) laughs. IE: construction gifs, waving rabbits, hit counter, the works. lol
Derek, funny story for you. My first attempt at a website was very simple. I only wanted to upload some previews of my art portfolio for job applications. This was back in the late 90s and there weren't many options. So I used Geocities, free based website, Geocites didn't allow for much, but it did allow html animation. So the site was 2 pages. The second page had my art sample. The first, homepage, had an animate rabbit that changed color when clicked to get to the next page.
I need to integrate SR into my website. I use my as ego stroking self promotion. I make the Kardashians look shy. I can talk about myself you ages, just ask me..lol
I think it is important to own a small piece of the internet that doesn't belong to someone else. SR is great. But if CJ suddenly picked up a billion from some long lost relative, why would he continue working. All our efforts here would have to be reinvested somewhere else. I know people that have invested hugely in Twitter. They have spent years developing a following. Elon wants to buy it. Who knows what he will do.
If we don't saying something about ourselves we leave it up to others to say something about us. Which might be dangerous.
Please keep in mind my career aspirations revolve around filmmaking. Script Revolution is more of an altruistic hobby. If I won the lottery, I'd be able to do more with it rather than less.
Well, okay, since you asked so nicely.

Yes, I know my blog is collecting a lot of dust at this point. I've been busy with other things. *shrugs*

That's a tough call and a personal choice.
