David Wright and his girlfriend have a suicide pact. She succeeds but he fails.
His mom moves him and his sister back to a cabin on the river, a place where they lived before her husband drowned.
Because she can't deal with her son by herself, David's psychiatrist convinces her to let her estranged mother-in-law help. Rose, more thorns than flowers, agrees even though she doesn't know for sure that he is her real grandson.
When David goes to his new school, the bullies, led by hot-shot quarterback Brendon Baily go after him. David meets Rick and Isaac in a video production class, and they decide they will do a video exposing the bullying.
When his family moves into their old cabin, David begins seeing a golden retriever. The dog, whom he names Rover, leads him around the river almost as if it's lived there for a long time. David finds evidence of bad things going on around the river.
Brennon stops bullying David because he likes David's sister Gabby, and his sister Mickee likes David. The other bullies stop when Isaac who has a brown belt in Karate kicks one's ass.
When Isaac, Rick, and David get invited to the end of the summer river party, they think maybe they've been accepted.
While David is gone with Brennon's sister, the bullies get Isaac drunk and gang up on him. A video gets uploaded to YouTube that shows Isaac being humiliated. David goes to his house and finds Isaac has hung himself with his brown belt.
During a home football game, David takes a flash drive of all the videos taken of bullying, locks himself in the press box, and plays the video over the electronic school board. He doesn't know everything that's on it, and he sees Brennon leading his drunk sister into an abandoned building to rape her.
A few days later, David finds his sister drowned. He confronts Brennon and beats him up, but Mickee shoots him with a pistol, and he falls into the river, nearly drowning, but Rover saves him. Before he confronted Brennon, David sent Rose a message. She finds him alive lying on the river bank.
David survives, and after local news stations air the video, and six girls come forward to testify about being drugged and raped at the river parties, Brennon and several other football players are arrested. David moves in with Rose.
Rose tells him that his father loved dogs, and named them all Rover. When they go back to the cabin so that David can get the rest of his stuff, David takes one last walk around the river. In a cave, he finds the bones of a dog with a tag that says Rover on it.
