This liot TV/webseries episode is based upon the writers real experiences of living in Mexico. These include being jailed in an immigration detention centre for a supposed visa infraction, as well as visiting a small village in Veracruz state, called Nautla which has a narco undercurrent. This is where the name for the narco thriller came from.
