For centuries, Earth has been used as a dumping ground for many of the galaxy's most dangerous beings. Implanted with chips giving them a human appearance and limiting the more destructive supernatural powers they may possess, they have been abandoned to life sentences on Earth - and most of them are not happy about it. The most powerful of these creatures, a Morothorian who calls himself Jack and has managed to disable his chip, leads "The Community" - a ruthless cabal of convicts determined to keep knowledge of their existence to a minimum while pursuing a way back home and the vengeance they feel they deserve. Although unwelcome in The Community due to her natural mind-reading ability, the blood-drinking Syn is nonetheless forced by Jack to serve it or be killed. When Jack demands Syn help him deliver a "friendly warning" to a politician overseeing a government black ops agency acting against them, Syn finally refuses. As punishment for her defiance, Jack orders the murder of a human woman, Rachel, whom Syn has recently begun dating and who is unaware of Syn's true nature. However, Rachel is saved when Jack's lackey, Max, is attacked by Cass - the newest extraterrestrial arrival on Earth, and also a Morothorian. Syn realises that Cass is the only one who could potentially rid Earth of Jack, but only if they can disable her chip and unleash her immensely powerful abilities; and only if Jack and The Community don't find her.
