Synopsis/Details
– Reporter Ahmed Osman is winding up his TV interview with British Minister of Justice Simon Chaucer-Jones. When the interview ends, the minister remains seated when he’s informed that his driver hasn’t yet arrived back to collect him.
The two men chat candidly about politics and, in particular, the private life of the unpopular Home Secretary, whose extra-marital affair is the subject of an open secret within the party.
It becomes clear that the two share a past – they were at university together, and both stood for election for the President of the Debating Society. They are polar opposites when it comes to their political ideals. It is revealed that the minister was responsible for a smear campaign to prevent his socialist opponent from winning. It is clear that Ahmed holds a grudge but is equally disgusted with how his interviewee still lives and manipulates his colleagues and, more importantly, the public. Ahmed coaxes his former university colleague to admit that he’d do what he had to do to depose the current Home Secretary and relieve her of her job.
Finally, the minister is informed that his driver has returned for him, and he leaves the studio. Ahmed remains and, through his mic and earpiece, confirms with an unseen colleague that the whole private conversation has been recorded. Ahmed elects to sit on the recording until a future date, perhaps, when the minister becomes Home Secretary. It will then find its way to be released to the world, causing not only the end of Simon Chaucer-Jones’ career but also the government he props up.
