Synopsis/Details
Jason Myers, a sharp yet morally ambiguous private detective, takes on a case from Adrian Waters, a wealthy man who suspects his wife, Cindy, of infidelity. Jason orchestrates a sting, exposing Cindy’s affair with a young man named Tony. However, as Jason relishes another successful case, Adrian suddenly collapses and dies mysteriously. Left baffled and shaken, Jason sets out to uncover the truth behind Adrian’s inexplicable demise. As Jason delves deeper, he is drawn into the enigmatic world of Bodhi, a spiritual institution co-founded by Adrian. There, he meets Cole Bannerman, a revered teacher with a hidden past, and Jenny, Adrian’s former best friend, who harbors her own secrets. Jason also discovers the presence of two ancient artifacts— the Soul Magnet and the Soul Sucker— objects rumored to manipulate the very essence of life and death. His investigation intertwines with Bodhi’s teachings and the enigmatic death of Riley Atkinson, a writer who once explored these very artifacts. Haunted by his own visions and the eerie presence of a one-eyed crow, Jason struggles to separate reality from illusion. His past relationship with Ashley, a woman who has now moved on, further complicates his emotions. As he gathers clues, Jason begins to suspect that Adrian’s death may be linked to supernatural forces and dark rituals within Bodhi. With his cynical wit and relentless drive, Jason inches closer to the truth, only to realize that he might be just another pawn in a much larger, more sinister game. As secrets unravel, he must confront his own beliefs and the price of knowledge—before he, too, becomes an empty vessel.

EXCERPTS FROM THE BLACK LIST EVALUATIONS:

1. "Those quick, back-and-forth exchanges help to keep the reader's eyes moving down the page and give the script an energy that can translate to the screen."
2. "The concepts of "soul sucking" and "soul transfer" are both clever and interesting as well, and they lead to some very intriguing escalations and revelations."
3. "Finally, there are a few really memorable visuals throughout the piece, such as the thousands of crows in Jason's wedding dream, the water transferring to the wall crater on page 66, and the soulless animals (including one human) on 74."
4. "The escalation of this magic has a lot of promise, with each magical reveal building on the last one. Jason's PTSD delusions are well-woven with the surreal and magical elements."
