Synopsis/Details
The Itter Castle Incident is based on actual events.
5 May 1945, Hitler is dead, the Third Reich is little more than smoking rubble, and no GI wants to be the last man killed in action against the Nazis. On this day, however, soldiers of the German Wehrmacht under the command of Major Josef "Sepp" Gangl, Austrian anti-Nazi resistance fighters, and American troops of the 12th Armored Division under the command of Captain John "Jack" Lee, fought side by side to defend Castle Itter and the stronghold’s high value French prisoners-of-war against an attacking force from the 17th SS-Panzergrenadier Division. The Itter Castle Incident is believed to be the last battle fought by American troops against the Nazis in World War Two, and the only battle in the war in which American and German soldiers fought as allies.
