Synopsis/Details
Tires SCREECH to a halt. The sound of crumpling metal echoes everywhere. Brady Hunter, a successful Vancouver book store owner, sits up in bed, sweat running down his face. This is a man haunted by the pain of his past and struggling to deal with the present.
Brady’s world begins to unravel when his mom (Mrs. Hunter) informs him that her cancer has returned with a vengeance. Unsure how to deal with the news from his mother, Brady digs deeper into his work and begins to pull away from his girlfriend (Lia), who continues to pressure him for a baby and wedding.
Back at the bookstore, a frantic young lady (Serena) rushes in and approaches Brady. Serena enlists Brady’s help in finding a rare first edition of Emily Bronte. Yet, Serena has more than a book on her mind when she invites Brady to join her for lunch. Reluctantly, Brady agrees.
The lunch is cut short when Lia joins the table and immediately recognizes Serena.
As his mom takes a turn for the worst, Brady searches for answers and retreats from friends and family. He begins to seek out Serena’s friendship. With his real-life world falling apart, Brady steps into a dream world where he sees a young boy (Nathan) seated by a pond as a worm crawls in the palm of his hand.
As Brady’s and Nathan’s improbable friendship beings to flourish, Nathan explains to Brady that the space between him and Serena is smaller than he thinks. Time passes and Mrs. Hunter worsens.
The next day at the bookstore, Brady enters his office to find Lia seated at his desk with an old newspaper clipping in hand. She forces Brady to face the hard truth that he and Serena had been involved in a car wreck some time ago which claimed the life of a young boy. Unsure why Lia has done this, Brady kicks her out of his office. Hours later, Lia and Serena sit sharing a cup of coffee and Lia presents Serena with the same information.
Fed up with Lia, Brady kicks her out of their apartment. Feeling responsible for what happened, he rushes to Serena’s apartment, but she is unwilling to see him, believing that he betrayed her. As Brady works on rebuilding the broken trust between them, he is visited one more time by Nathan and Mrs. Hunter. Nathan encourages Brady to forgive Serena and to uncover the space between the two of them. Brady watches as Nathan and Mrs. Hunter disappear into a fog.
