This is part of an anthology called Eden's Glitch.

Jake Evans is a family man with a loving wife, two kids, and a job with huge potential. But that's just a lie. Jake is part of a military virtual reality program. The purpose: recreate the worst day of his life over and over. Each day Jake will watch helplessly as he loses his wife, kids, job, and house. All this is programmed by Zeb, a faithful employee of the Global Security Sentry company. Zeb is just following orders from the head boss, but the question remains. why is this constant nightmare necessary? the question of Why? Jake will eventually fall apart and wish for death from this endless cycle. He finally gets a meeting with the boss where he learns the deeper purpose of his suffering. There's an alien race coming to Earth that uses tragedy and trauma to kill its victims. The boss is raising an army to combat their psychological effects.
