Synopsis/Details
Driving instructor Clive pulls up outside Jess's house for her lesson. He is late, as usual. Jess immediately wants to know when she will practice her emergency stops, as this is the only thing that excites her about learning to drive. Clive assures her that she'll be allowed to execute it soon, but not today. On the High Street en route to practice Jess's three-point turns, Clive notices his wife's car parked outside a cake shop. He tells Jess to park up. Clive then sees his wife, Stephanie, exit the cake shop and enter the card shop next door. He begins to explain to Jess that he believes his wife is arranging a surprise party for a man she is having an affair with. The reason for his belief is the fact that Stephanie has been very secretive of late, such as ending phone calls when he enters a room and closing her laptop when he's around. In addition, Stephanie is supposed to visit her mother, whom he dislikes and has no time for him because he is thoughtless and uncouth. For this reason, her parents have never invited them to use their villa in Spain. Jess, who informs him that she is supposed to be on a driving lesson and not a stake-out, tells him that he is being paranoid – a theory that Clive immediately dismisses. Stephanie comes out of the card shop and gets back into her car. Clive tells Jess to 'follow that car,' but Jess explains she is not his getaway driver. Clive promises her two free lessons and some emergency stops. They strike the deal, and Jess begins to follow Stephanie's car in the slow-running line of traffic. Stephanie's car parks up once again outside the bank, so Clive instructs Jess to park up in a side road opposite so he can watch what is going on. Clive's paranoia increases as a man is seen talking to Stephanie through her window. His paranoia increases, and while Jess tries to reason with him, he takes his eyes off his wife's car. When he looks back, she and the man have gone, but the car remains. Clive assumes that Stephanie and her fancy man have gone to a hotel and begins panicking. Just then, there's a knock on the window. It's Stephanie. She asks why Clive has been following her. He explains his crazy theory. Stephanie explains that the man was her father, collecting foreign money from the bank. She admits there is a surprise party, but it's for her own 50th birthday, as she knew that Clive wouldn't bother. She planned on telling her parents that it was Clive who thoughtfully organised it, therefore getting back in their good books, and hopefully, they'd invite them to use their villa in Spain. Clive is put in his place. Stephanie tells him she expects a grovelling apology later on. Clive proposes three free lessons and five emergency stops to Jess if she promises not to tell anyone what happened. She agrees and drives off.
