Hoping for a fresh start, David Castillo (M40s) moves his wife and kids into a desert community with a growing pest problem. On the first day, the youngest son, Adam (M13), discovers green-striped ants crawling in and out of the ground and biting his legs. More ants seep and creep into Leslie Castillo’s (F16) bedroom as she struggles to fit in after leaving her friends and swim teammates at her old high school. The ongoing infestation escalates as ants eat away at the family’s resolve to start anew after losing their previous residence thanks to David’s failed business venture.
At their wit’s end, David and his wife, Jen Castillo (F40s), call an exterminator to eradicate the ants from their new home and learn that the house was built on a former waste dumping site. Trying to regain his family’s trust, David attempts to help his family acclimate by encouraging his son to make friends, and David builds a pool for Leslie so she can continue swimming at her new school. Leslie and Adam explore the land and find an abandoned house with a chemically infected creature that chases after them.
The connection between the waste dumping corporation and the pests becomes clear when Leslie and her friends sneak into a chemical facility and are attacked by enlarged and chemically infused ants. Despite the exterminator’s efforts, the even bigger ants rebound and invade the new home causing the family to retreat. To ensure his family’s safety, David Castillo makes the ultimate sacrifice as the desert town succumbs to an ant invasion.
