Synopsis/Details
Irfan Khan, around mid 40s, a Muslim man from India moves to New York to reunite with his wife and kids. The moment he arrives he finds himself alien to everything around him. With no charge in the cellphone he walks to the nearest phone booth to call his wife, Alina Khan. But to Irfan's horror the call gets disconnected, his suitcase gets stolen and he loses the address and phone number of Alina's house. He hails a taxi and he is dropped near a house. He knocks on the door and finds a fat women who gets angry and threatens him that she would call the police. That night Irfan decides to sleep on a bench. When Alina goes out to buy milk at night she finds her husband sleeping on the bench and brings him home.
For the next couple of days Irfan deals with jet lag, learns that people in NewYork has their dinner early unlike India, learns that people make small talk everywhere, learns that people buy expensive gifts for their host at a dinner party, learns that he must read labels before buying any food, learns every food ordering comes with huge portion and also learns to clean his own plate. He also learns that his kids and wife are not happy to have him around.
While he tries his best to bond with his kids Mira, around 17 and Ayan, around 14; a handsome yoga instructor, Mark Anthony, mid 40s, moves next door and on top of all his miseries he sees Alina bonding well with Mark. He catches Mira having an affair with Jacob and advices her to be careful of boys around her age and not to have her heart broken to which Mira gets angry. He also finds it difficult to get a job and blames it on the white people who are ruling the job market. In such tough times the only person giving a boost of confidence is Jubaida, his mother in law. Irfan who is struggling with job, dealing with jealousy towards Mark and Alina's bonding, getting himself worried for Mira; finally bonds well with Ayan. He cooks for Ayan's friend, Timothy's birthday party and Ayan informs Irfan that the guest loved the food he cooked. He also starts cooking in the house and Alina gets jealous of Irfan being praised by the family for his excellent skill in cooking.
One day Irfan decides to lose his weight to impress Alina and orders weight loss pills online to get faster result. But stops it after a month when Alina thinks Irfan needs to go to Mark's yoga class to lose weight. Irfan also fails the driving test even though he has driven a car in India. His wife becomes tired of him and stops talking when she sees that the weight loss company has charged 5000 dollars and that he has fallen in to an online scam. However with miserable things going around Irfan starts bonding with his eldest child, Mira who finds out that Jacob has been cheating on her and that her Dad has always been right. One night when Irfan walks on the street of Newyork, a drunk woman tries to kiss him. Alina who is coincidentally on the same street misunderstands him and thinks that it's his jealousy towards Mark that is making him kiss another woman.
In the end when Irfan doesn't get any more decent job calls, he finally gets a call from a job he doesn’t like much and therefore becomes a pizza delivery guy. While delivering a pizza he meets the fat woman once again and finds out that she is Ayan's friend, Timothy's mother. Irfan follows her advice and opens up an Indian food delivery service. But sadly he becomes tired of not getting any orders from anywhere. One day when Alina is jogging in the park, Alina bumps in to Mark who tries to impress her and confesses his love for her. Alina who sees Irfan on the other side of the park, sitting on a bench and crying, ignores Mark. Mark gets violent and seeing this Irfan rescues her and punches him. Seeing police approaching them, Irfan and Alina runs out of the park. They finally starts to bond well with each other. In the end with the help of Alina, Mira, Ayan and Jubaida the food delivery business starts to grow and the family lives a happy life together.
