Amid the devastation of the American Civil War, the Union Army forms the Veteran Reserve Corps, a unit composed of soldiers too badly wounded to return to the front lines—but unwilling to abandon their duty. Tasked by General Grant to lead the 18th Regiment, Colonel Jon Time, himself physically broken by war, embraces the assignment as a final chance to serve with honor rather than be sent home in disgrace.
Reunited with his trusted comrade, the steadfast and equally scarred Sergeant Abram Kuriger, Time begins shaping the regiment into a cohesive force from a patchwork of wounded men. Among them are Lieutenant William Tecumseh Anderson, a deeply conflicted officer struggling with fear and self-doubt; “Old Irish,” a fearless sharpshooter missing a foot; Cal Straw, a legless soldier who becomes the guide for the blind but powerful Private George “Thunder” Huntred; and Henry Parker Two, a young runaway slave seeking refuge and justice after his family is murdered.
Bound by shared suffering and a desire for dignity, the men forge an unshakable brotherhood under Time’s rallying cry: “Alone we are invalid, together we are an army.” Their resolve is tested during dangerous assignments, including guarding Confederate prisoners and confronting violent marauders led by the ruthless Dogtooth and Red Beard.
The regiment’s greatest trial comes with a grueling 25-mile march to Port Royal, where exhaustion, loss, and the elements push them to the brink. Along the way, they suffer casualties and face moments of extraordinary bravery—none more powerful than when Anderson confronts his fears to defeat Red Beard, only to be saved from certain death by the coordinated heroism of Cal and Thunder in a storm-lashed rescue.
By the time they reach Port Royal, only a fraction of the regiment can stand for roll call. Yet their mission is fulfilled. Through sacrifice, resilience, and unity, the men of the 18th prove that even in broken bodies, the human spirit can endure—and that honor is not lost with injury, but forged anew in the face of impossible odds.
