Benny Trask, 18, gets a job as a front desk trainee at the luxury Fairlawn Hotel. He learns, to his surprise, that Mr. Sanderson (the manager) never wants a particular room rented, He hears through the grapevine that it is the manager's own little love nest. On a very busy day, Benny sneaks a friend and his girl into the room for some time alone. They later are reported missing, and Benny finds no sign of them in the room.
Benny learns from a fellow employee that Room 1123 was rented a few years ago by Mr. and Mrs. Lewis, a young married couple. The husband was killed by a drunk driver in the hotel parking lot. The wife, in her grief, committed suicide by slashing her wrists in the tub.
Benny goes to the room and calls upon the spirit of Mrs. Lewis, who appears. He asks her to let his friends - who are still alive but keeping her company - go. She refuses, mentioning that, since she killed herself, she cannot be with her husband. Benny convinces her that perhaps the gesture of freeing his friends might be just the sacrifice that would make the powers that be reunite her and her husband.
After receiving assurances from Sanderson and Benny that Room 1123 will never be rented, the missing people reappear.
Days later, Benny passes Room 1123. He smiles and walks on as he hears Mrs. Lewis's ghostly giggle and the pop of a champagne cork.
