Synopsis/Details
"According to Plan" is a dramedy that tells the story of a former professor, Nate Covington, struggling with early onset dementia and his desire to get back to his old home in New Orleans, where he claims to have buried something very valuable to him. His attorney son, Ken, who thinks the treasure doesn’t exist, prevents him from going.
Nate’s grandson, Dante, who is 14 and lives in St. Louis with his Uncle Ken following his parents’ deaths when Dante was two, is sympathetic to his grandfather’s wishes, and ultimately convinces 16 year old Carly, his next door neighbor, to drive them to New Orleans – for a price, of course.
The opportunity finally presents itself when Ken has to go to New York for a few days for a deposition, while Carly’s parents travel to Europe for their 20th wedding anniversary. Once underway, it doesn’t take long for their plans to spiral out of control, as they encounter thugs, snakebites, fender benders and the declining health of Nate.
The trip does provide the opportunity for Nate to connect with Dante, and for Dante to gain a better understanding of how to interact with the opposite sex. Along the way, Dante comes to gain a better perspective of who he is and where he’s come from.
Before they can finish the trip, Nate suffers a massive stroke, and Dante and Carly take on the daunting challenge of not only getting him medical treatment, but also informing Ken what they’ve done and pressing onward to carry out Nate’s wish to retrieve his treasure, and what they ultimately find will change Dante's life.
What follows is a touching story where our young heroes face their fears and take on the challenges that arise when life inevitably doesn’t go “according to plan.”
