Synopsis/Details
KAZUKI is 23 years old and away from her home in Fujimi for the first time. For the first time, she flies to Ireland, to the island of Inishbofin, for her first real job, to look after the Callens' estate alone for four months, not knowing that the deserted island harbors a cruel past. Kazuki is repeatedly plagued by nightmares, sleepwalking in a time that does not seem to be hers.
In parallel, KATIE and her family end up in Los Angeles when the 51-year-old bio-chemistry professor is thrown from one second to the next into a panic, chaos and amok with only one goal. To get home to the Malibu Hills as quickly as possible and as unharmed as possible before this rampaging global catastrophe also executes her, her husband Sean and their two daughters Emma and Riley.
Kazuki is confronted by beings she is not afraid of, but the man who appears before her eye seems to have a stronger connection to her than Kazuki understands at the time.
KODI (27) was admitted due to insanity, but he sees things far beyond classic insanity. Sees himself, only differently. Sees Kazuki only differently. Sees Katie only differently. While Kodi tries to come to terms with his visions of the future under the worst of asylum conditions, Kazuki's mental state changes from day to day, influenced by what Katie experiences, what Kodi suffers, only to find out in the end that they are all connected. All share everything and everything they are will declare themselves 3025.
In a world that is not our earth. On a planet that is being repopulated. A civilization that promises progress and future, while adapted, optimized and improved to learn from past mistakes. The frequency of the earth increases in an inexplicable way and erases all people of the 3rd dimension. A natural selection. Farming of a new population.
Ascension starts as a classic Japanese horror movie, but after only a few minutes it turns into a spiral of impressions, memories, knowledge and not-knowing. Ascension is today's fear and then psychosis. Is idyllic and calm, yet apocalyptic and harsh, just like we humans are. Ascension is a film about connections, about re-emergence and evolution. A story of three ordinary people at different times, all aiming to take unknown, new steps into a future that defined and influenced the human past millennia ago.
Ascension begins as what appears to be a typical Japanese horror ghost story, but in "reality" it is a twisted, multi-dimensional psychological thriller about reincarnation, the future of all of us, and new life far from our planet.
