Synopsis/Details
Gitte is the story of Margit Blau, a 72-year-old elderly woman whose domineering and brutal husband was recently killed in a car accident. Thank God, because now Gitte finally gets the chance to do with her life what she should have done back when she was 21. With the very person who was the only one who ever gave her true affection. The only person Gitte has ever really loved.
For Gitte, that means leaving her small town, hitting the highway and heading out into the world. Gitte is a "first timer." She takes a road trip outside of Germany for the first time. Alone. The first time she travels beyond her own known borders. The first time she stands on her own two feet. After almost 57 years of marriage, finally breaking free and discovering herself. Perhaps taking the last steps to her own happiness before it ends. In a time that has not stood still like Gitte herself. In a time when everything is digital, fast and fleeting. In which everyone talks to each other, but no one really understands anyone else. In which values and manners are completely different and are lived differently than back then.
In search of her old, beloved female friendship, on her way to rediscover those feelings from back then, those sensations she never experienced again, Gitte has to travel to Portugal, where Catherine lives today. But Gitte will not only discover different, challenging worlds, allow new, unfamiliar perspectives, and encounter strange, incomprehensible impressions and unusual personalities, she will realize that life never goes as planned and, as with everything, the journey is the destination.
Gitte used to be a kind woman and ended up lonely, poor and sad. As an elderly, isolated grandmother, she sets out to mature and discover herself. She evolves, blossoms, and at the end of the day finds much more than she bargained for.
Gitte is an examination of today, as sensitive and cheerful as she is, in between a touching love story between two good old friends.
