Synopsis/Details
The Pacific Theatre, 1944; Sergeant Ryan Van Xant is leading a group of Marines to reinforce a small base from a potential Japanese attack when their planes are attacked by a mysterious aggressor. Narrowly surviving a crash landing, Van Xant and his few remaining troops are saved by dawn, and the appearance of Captain Cooper and her team of P-61 Black Widow night fighters.
Cooper reveals their attacker is a monstrous nocturnal insect-like creature that infests parts of the Pacific, and daylight has driven them back to their nest somewhere on the island. The troops await a pick-up from a Navy ship, but the rescue is stalled by a pair of enemy destroyers and the group reluctantly hole up in the base overnight, a wait that should be safe if they keep hidden and quiet. As they wait, Van Xant and the beautiful captain form an attraction.
The night is shattered when the Japanese destroyers shell the island and rile up the creatures. Cooper reveals they have no choice but to try and try and get off the island by themselves, and as if the creatures weren’t threat enough, a bomber strike is en route to prevent the creatures swarming to a new nest.
They have one chance; Van Xant must lead a group of Jeeps to a patrol boat moored at the docks, whilst Cooper and her planes provide air cover…but that means driving across the island towards the nest of angry creatures.
A frantic, nightmarish journey begins, and the troops must fight every inch of the way. Low on ammunition and losing men to the vicious, deadly creatures, Van Xant is almost at safety when horrendous news comes over the radio; Cooper’s plane is damaged and she has to bail out, right in midst of the monsters. Sending his men on to the boat, Van Xant turns back to make a desperate attempt to save Cooper, before she is either eaten alive or killed in the bombing raid.
