Synopsis/Details
John and Gwen are a couple in their mid-twenties living in a small apartment. They have been trying to conceive a child for some time, and their efforts have been a significant part of their lives. John works at a local deli restaurant, where he is well-liked by his employees and customers. He is proud of his work and enjoys the bustling environment. Meanwhile, Gwen is anxious about their attempts to have a child, which weighs heavily on her mind.
One afternoon, Gwen visits her doctor and receives life-changing news: she is pregnant. Overjoyed, she rushes home to share the news with John. He is initially overjoyed as well but soon realizes that fatherhood means he needs to control his drinking habit. John promises to cut down on his drinking to be a better partner and future father, and Gwen is hopeful about their future together.
As Gwen’s pregnancy progresses, John struggles to maintain his sobriety. He continues to work at the deli, but his stress and fatigue lead him to seek solace in alcohol. John tries to hide his drinking from Gwen, but she begins to notice changes in his behavior. His once cheerful and confident demeanor starts to fade, replaced by irritability and detachment.
Despite his best efforts, John’s addiction begins to take a toll on his relationship with Gwen. She becomes increasingly concerned about his drinking and the impact it could have on their unborn child. Their once loving and supportive relationship becomes strained, with arguments and misunderstandings becoming more frequent.
After their son is born, John’s drinking escalates. The joy of fatherhood is overshadowed by his growing dependence on alcohol. He becomes more withdrawn and less engaged with his family. Gwen tries to support him, but her efforts are met with resistance and denial. John’s addiction leads to verbal abuse, and Gwen starts to feel helpless and alone.
One evening, John and Gwen have a heated argument in their bedroom while their son cries in the crib. Gwen accuses John of being an alcoholic and expresses her fears for their son’s safety and well-being. John, in a drunken rage, lashes out at Gwen, both verbally and physically. He slaps her across the face, leaving her stunned and heartbroken. Gwen realizes that she can no longer stay in this toxic environment and decides to leave John, taking their son with her.
In the aftermath of their confrontation, John is left alone in their apartment, surrounded by empty bottles and the remnants of his broken family. He wakes up one morning to find Gwen and their son gone. The once vibrant and loving home is now a desolate landscape of crumpled sheets and discarded bottles. As John reflects on his actions and the consequences of his addiction, he is overwhelmed by a profound sense of remorse and despair. He watches a video of Gwen and their son, realizing the depth of his loss and the irreversible damage he has caused.
