Synopsis/Details
BURT FELLMAN, mid 40's, an overweight degenerate, is laid off from his job as a buggy boy and kicked out of his apartment for being two months behind on rent. Looking for an escape from his problems, he tells his dying mother he'll live at her place to look after her, but she threatens to slice his throat and informs him he isn't getting any of her money when she dies. Down and out, Burt goes to his brother CARL FELLMAN, late 40's, white collar, looking to get a job with the boutique family home insurance business, The Fellman Group, started by their deceased father, now run by Carl. His brother, sympathetic, gives him a job. When Burt's mother finds out about this, she laughs and leaves him with a bet that if he can stay employed there for a full year he'll get on her will. Burt at first finds holding the job difficult, and at one point jumps out the second story office window, but over time adjusts to his surroundings. When an employee who's been away, ASHLEY, early 30's, ruffle and crazy, returns to work, he falls for her and tries to pick her up by getting a co-worker to throw a frisbee near her. Over time he develops a relationship with Ashley, and they become a couple. All in the while, The Fellman Group faces financial trouble and is on the precipice of going under. WILL, early forties, a salesman with The Fellman Group, has been sabotaging the company for a larger rival insurance company called Colossal Insurance. As Burt gets in the way of Will's plans, Will exposes him to the press for stealing money from a partner charity company. Carl has no choice but to fire Burt three months short of him being employed for a year. Burt becomes a bum on the street, and his mother dies. At the Fellman Group, Ashley becomes suspicious of Will's sneaky behavior. She finds Burt on a downtown street, informs him of the news, and gets him to pull himself together. The two set out on a quickly paced series of errands to piece together clues before The Fellman Group merges with Colossal Insurance at a conference that afternoon. After gaining the right evidence they disrupt the conference right before Carl signs the merging contract, and Burt saves his family business from being eaten by Colossal Insurance. Carl, proud of his brother despite not staying employed a full year, gives him his share of the will, telling him their mother was proud too.
