Synopsis/Details
RIZO, mid 20's, docks worker, hears news from ANGIE, mid 20's, that MIMI, mid 20's, is returning with her new husband JIMMY, mid 20's, to live in Toronto after being gone for almost ten years. At a surprise birthday party for Jimmy, Rizo dances an old 80's routine with Mimi, which opens a well of a rich past of emotions between the two. Rizo visits Mimi at her condo and in an act of passion they have intercourse. Rizo tries to talk to her, but she continually ignores and avoids him. Eventually, he gets through to Mimi and tells her he wants to be with her. In response, she wants nothing to do with him and tells him to leave her alone.
Determined to get closer to Mimi, Rizo invites Jimmy to play on his baseball team and eventually becomes motorcycle buddies with him. Suffering from severe anxiety, Rizo seeks out a psychiatrist who he confides his problems in and tells him he experiences an out of world connection with Mimi. Jimmy receives a residency opportunity, so he and Mimi leave Toronto and return after a year and a half. Rizo stalks Mimi only to be rejected, which shows neither his nor her views toward one another have changed. Rizo opens up to his psychiatrist that he knows Mimi feels the same way as him but is just scared. His psychiatrist refers him to an old philosophy book which speaks about the androgynous, a third gender being both man and woman, which he thinks will help him. Things complicate more for Rizo when his wife Angie surprises him with news that she's pregnant, which makes a life for him with Mimi far less likely.
Jimmy tells Rizo Mimi isn't sleeping with him anymore and Rizo takes this as a sign that Mimi's feelings toward him are growing. Mimi caves to Rizo and confesses she's in love with him. After debate, they decide they'll leave their lives behind and board a ship together to start a new one. They meet at the dockyard, but Rizo isn't able to get on the ship as he's matured and changed his view. The closing image is of the two staring out at the water with the sun shining low over the horizon.
