Synopsis/Details
“Dexter” meets “Killing Eve”
EVAN and JEN, amateur true crime podcasters, record an episode on three sorority girls who were brutally murdered in the eighties. Despite a number of leads, the culprit was never caught, the lone survivor disappeared, and the case went cold.
Evan reveals to Jen he has tracked the survivor, who now goes by LAUREN MCDONOUGH, to a small town not far from where they live. A last minute emergency keeps Jen from travelling with Evan to interview Lauren. She begs him wait but Evan refuses.
In the tiny town of Collingwood, Lauren prepares breakfast for her husband CAMERON and two children, ARDEN and MICHAEL. Arden complains about not being able to find her favourite blouse while Michael remains quiet. They eventually head off to school and Cameron departs to his job as a local contractor.
While doing the grocery shopping, Evan ambushes Lauren and asks for an interview. Lauren refuses but Evan holds his ground and threatens to reveal her true identity. Knowing her peaceful life is in jeopardy, Lauren agrees to meet in Evan’s motel room later that day.
Meanwhile, Cameron begins an affair with a woman whose house he has been working on, which he neglects to mention in the marriage counselling session he and Lauren attend later that day.
At school, Arden struggles with the aftermath of a cheerleading accident. A number of girls have targeted her, believing that Arden facilitated the injury of their captain in order to advance her own position on the team. Across the school, Michael’s history teacher sits behind his desk looking at revealing photos of a young woman on his phone. Upon arriving home from school, Arden walks in on Michael taking photos of himself dressed in her missing blouse.
Lauren arrives at a seedy motel for her interview with Evan, where he reveals to her that he know she was not a survivor of the attack all those years ago, but the murderer. Cornered, Lauren kills Evan and stages the scene as a suicide. She returns home to a surprise party Cameron is throwing for her birthday. The local Chief of Police attends as a family friend, and mentions to Lauren he spent the day dealing with the suicide of an out of towner.
Jen arrives in Collingwood searching for Evan. She goes to Lauren who lies and says she does not recognize him when shown a photo. Jen heads to the police station to file a missing persons report, where she is informed of Evan’s suicide. At the McDonough house, Lauren finds evidence of Cameron’s affair while doing his laundry.
The pilot ends with Lauren adding Evan’s belongings to a box of trophies. The box contains memorabilia of her past murders all the way back to the night she killed her three housemates. Across town in the motel, a maid discovers a hidden camera Evan placed to record his entire interview.
