Synopsis/Details
We are introduced to enigmatic Kiko riding on a Greyhound bus en route from Chiapas, Mexico. His destination is a municipality on the outskirts of Los Angeles where luchador tryouts are being held in a wrestling gym owned by Hector Guerra, the hapless son of a Mexican drug kingpin.
Although Kiko is a gifted luchador and passionate about wrestling his goal is to enlist in “the squad” - an elite crew of luchador assassins put together to enforce discipline in the Guerra drug empire. Having your own team of luchador enforcers/killers is the ultimate status symbol in narco culture. Vengeance is Kiko’s motive for joining the squad. Through flashbacks we learn Kiko’s wife and young son were murdered, strangled to death, by members of Hector’s squad.
Kiko’s brother-in-law Rodrigo, a rouge FBI agent, is his accomplice. Their plan is to pick off one by one the four wrestlers responsible for the murders of their loved ones, then go after the ringleaders, Hector and Don Guerra. Kiko will dispatch them all with his bare hands. Which is why he spends each night alone obsessively perfecting his choke hold technique. Rodrigo has access to high tech surveillance equipment which he and Kiko utilize to gain intel and deceive the wrestlers in the squad, pitting them against each other and then finally luring each one into a match to the death versus Kiko.
In order to ingratiate himself with Hector Kiko has to prove his worth both as high-flying acrobatic luchador and cold-blooded killer. All the while working to sabotage Hector’s business by stealing drugs and money and killing-off the wrestlers in his squad. So there’s plenty of luchador action in and outside the ring along the way.
Inklings of the supernatural shroud Kiko throughout the story. Eventually it is revealed that Kiko himself was killed in the brutal attack on his family and brought back from the other side through the dark power of Santeria. When both he and Rodrigo are caught and tortured by Guerra henchmen Kiko will need all that power. But it won’t be easy for him to exact his final revenge on those who ordered the slaughter of his family.
