Synopsis/Details
Atop a snowy, rugged peak in southern Norway, Halvard, a stocky, barrel-chested man with a bear pelt across his shoulders leads the brash explorers, Edrik and Stein, up a steep mountain path. When Halvard refuses to enter a cave over stories of a troll that guards the stones, Edrik tells him he’s lost his cut. Inside the cave, they discover three frozen headless bodies of eighteenth-century explorers and a large uncut diamond in one of their pockets. When Stein snatches it away, claiming they each get an equal cut, Edrik convinces him the tunnels beyond must be teeming with gems. But all they find is a dead end as Edrik shoves Stein over the edge of a steep drop before securing a climbing rope to a stalagmite and lowering himself into the chamber below. Crystals of all sizes shimmer and sparkle in the chamber, and Edrik pries his pick into the wall and catches the reflection of a troll-like shadow. He turns and is relieved to see the silhouette of Halvard, and he explains about Stein’s ‘accident’ while tightening his grip on the rock pick held behind his back. But Stein’s voice says he killed him over a rock, and Halvard rushes at Edrik with his bloody bone axe raised high above his head. Sprouting from his neck and chest are the living, snarling heads of the three eighteenth-century explorers and Stein. They saved him the biggest cut!
