Synopsis/Details
Leslie, a young reporter, questions a one-armed local on reports of cattle mutilations at a nearby billabong. The local, suspecting her to be chasing the bunyip, a mythical Australian river monster, warns her of the price of such a discovery. Leslie ignores him and after returning to her ute, Troy, the driver, ploughs through the gate that blocks their path. At the billabong, Troy removes the liver from one of the decomposing cattle carcasses and drives it through with the hooked end of a winch cable attached to the ute, through it. He hurls the liver into the water while Leslie controls the winch from the vehicle. Something massive beneath the surface pulls the cable, dragging the ute towards the billabong. Troy leaps into the ute and slams it into reverse, but he is too late. The ute sinks to the bottom, and a massive claw smashes through the driver’s side window, grabbing Troy. Leslie winds down her window and swims towards the surface. Back on dry land, Gideon examines the collapsed edge of the billabong. He reminds the unseen Leslie that if you’re not ready for the truth, it’ll tear you apart. At that the moment, the Bunyip, resembling an enormous, mutated yabby covered in mud and slime, bursts from the billabong and tears Leslie in half.
