Synopsis/Details
1947, a scheming wife hires a bold detective to find the dirt on her wealthy, inventor husband. Instead, he discovers a dying boy kept alive by the world’s first mechanical heart. Brighter is a Science Fiction, Noir for general audiences that explores themes of technology and betrayal. STORY: DETECTIVE UNDERWOOD investigates a remote airplane hangar in the desert. He finds what appears to be the laboratory of a mad scientist. As he gets close to a piece of equipment a robot arm snatches his tie, choking him. Quick thinking makes Underwood undo his tie in the nick of time. This near escape triggers a flashback. How did he get here? VERONICA WERNER moves, acts, and looks like a movie star. She lights up the room in Underwood’s dumpy office. Straight to the point, she wants her husband followed. She wants dirt so she can take him to the cleaners in a divorce. However, Underwood has a past with women like her and although he accepts the job, he finds her suspicious. Following KONRAD WERNER, Underwood hides in the shadows to take some pictures. The clicks of the camera startle and scare Werner so he drops a box in the street. He hurries to recover but almost cries when a car runs over a kid’s baseball cap he dropped. He scrambles away, leaving behind a mysterious glowing object. Before Underwood can figure out what he found he’s unceremoniously beaten up by a couple of lowlifes he owes money to. Back in the present, Konrad Werner finds Underwood snooping around the hangar. After a brief tussle, Werner is shot. Before the ambulance arrives he must explain the situation to Underwood. All Underwood sees is the body of a boy with mechanical parts where his heart should be. Is Werner really a mad scientist, or a desperate father who invented a breakthrough that can revolutionize medicine?
